Ancient Deeds of the Mountfort Family of Dartmouth, Devon and Bridport, Dorset

This is research into the deeds found in A Descriptive Catalogue of Ancient Deeds (volumes 1-6) that mention the Mountford or Montford family of Dartmouth, Devon and Bridport, Dorset, in an attempt to discover the exact relationship between William Olyver and William Mountfort. The deeds refer to three Mountfort family members: John Oliver, of Dartmouth, and his sons, John, also of Dartmouth, and William, originally of Dartmouth and alter of Bridport. William was a Member of Parliament and further biographical detail can be found in The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1386-1421 entry for MOUNTFORT, William II (d.1437), of Dartmouth, Devon and Bridport, Dorset. pp20-1 (J.S. This deed is dated 12 May 1385, and gives a date by which John's sons were already born.

Indenture by which John Prestecote, John Haulegh, and Thomas Aysshendon grant that a certain annual rent charge of 20l. granted by John Prydeaux, knight, to the said John Prestecote, &c., out of the manors of Combe in Tynhyde, Colomp John and Godeford, shall be void if the said John Prydeaux, his wife or heirs make no claim against John Montfort, of Dartmouth, or against John or William his sons, or allow the said John Montfort to bring a writ of trespass against him without any disturbance by the said John Prydeaux. 12 May, 8 Richard II.  French.

This deed, dated May 1391, gives a date by which William was already married to Alice, and documents that John Mountfort "the elder" was still alive by this date.

This deed, dated 14 August 1391, refers to John Montfort "the younger", giving clarity to which John is involved here, but implying that John Mountfort "the elder" is still alive at this date.

This deed, dated 20 July 1397, records John being of Dartmouth, Devon, but owning land in Weymouth, Dorset. He is no longer referred to as "the younger" in this and subsequent deeds, perhaps implying that his father had died by this date.

This deed, dated 20 July 1397, records John being of Dartmouth, Devon, but owning land in Weymouth, Dorset.

This deed is dated 1 November 1398, and describes John as a merchant of Dartmouth..

This deed is dated 20 January 1430(1).

Devon. C. 6142.  Bond by Edmund Arnald, merchant of Dertemouth, to John Montfoyt, merchant of Dertemouth, for the payment of 14l. 6s. 8d. at Michaelmas next. 30 April, 10 Henry IV. Seal. Endorsed (in French) with condition that the said Edmund shall obtain the king's writ to discharge the said John of all subsidy, prise and custom on certain goods unladed and reladed by him at Dertemouth.

This deed is dated 20 November 1409.

This deed, dated 17 January 1389(90), refers to "Alice Barbour, widow". The deed also gives the names of Alice's mother and father.

Notes:
William was the William Mountford "of Dartmouth, Devon and Bridport, Dorset" who was a Member of Parliament representing Bridport in 1413, 1419 and 1422, married Alice Barbour and died in 1437 (this William Mountford should not be confused with Sir William Mountford of Coleshill, Warwickshire, who was also an M.P. during this time and died in 1452).

This deed is dated 12 May 1385, and gives a date by which William was already born (although his birth must have quite a bit prior to this as he is documented as married in a deed dated 19 May 1390)

Deed C.3096 is dated early 10 May 1403 and Deed C.3097 is dated 21 February 1404(5).

Defeasance of a bond by William Wyet, to William Mountfort, for 80l. payable at Easter next, witnessing that the said bond shall be void if the said Wyet pay to Mountfort 61l. 5s. 4d. at the dates and in the instalments herein specified. Suthampton, 21 February, 6 Henry IV. Seal, imperfect.

This deed is dated late January or early February 1404(5) mentioning William and his wife, Alice.

This deed is dated June 1406.

This deed, dated 5 April 1408, witnessed by William, documents him as a bailiff of Bridport.

This deed is dated 2 November 1408.

Grant by John Maydegoud, chaplain, to William Mountffort, Thomas Stykelane, Richard Huyde, Ralph Gonys, and William Tracy of a piece of land called ‘Morterheygh,’ within the liberty of the town of Bridport, adjoining a lane leading to Kyllyngesmell ; to hold the same for maintaining the obit of Isabella Hovell, and the celebration of three masses in the church of St. Mary, Bridport, for the souls of the said Isabella and John Beljambe, once a year. This deed is dated late August 1411.

This deed is dated late May 1414.

This deed, dated 7 December 1415 and the Thursday before, record William granting land in Dartmouth.

This deed is dated 6 October 1419, and describes William as a merchant of Bridport.

This deed, dated 3 September 1421, records a connection between William Mountfort and Thomas Olyver, the father of William Olyver who married William Mountfort's daughter, Joan.

In this deed, dated 3 November 1428, William sells land in Dartmouth, possibly including the "palace" he received from his brother in 1395.

Confirmation by Nicholas Carrewe, knight, son and heir of Thomas Carrewe, knight, of a grant by William Mountfort of Bryde- port and Alice his wife inter alia to John Wareyn, canon of Exeter, John Jaybien of Plymouth, Thomas Olyver of Kyngesbrygge and William son of the said Thomas, of certain lands, &c., in Southton Derte- muth, to hold to them and the heirs of the body of the said William with remainder in default to the heirs of the body of the said Thomas Olyver, with remainder in default to divers other persons and the heirs of their bodies; which lands were held of the said Thomas Carrewe, his father, and other his ancestors; with warranty thereof to all the said persons. The last day of February, 14 Henry VI. Seal.

This deed, dated 14 September 1444, describes Alice, the wife of William Mountfort, as a widow, documenting that William had died by this date.

[Dorset.] C.1839.  Release by Alice, late the wife of William Mountfort, of Brydeport, widow, to John Burgeis, of the same, of all actions. 14 September, 23 Henry VI.  Seal.

The will of her husband, William Olyver, dated 5 May 1475 and proved on 5 July 1476, makes provision for the soul of William Mountford.

...  Item, to Joan, now my wife, all my lands and tenements in Briddeporte, Weymoth, Wyke, Melcomb Regis, and half the ferry of Smalemouth, and one house and two acres of land in Wyke to hold for her life, and after her death the premises shall remain to Alice and Elizabeth, my daughters, and their heirs equally. Each of my daughters shall have of my goods according to her degree for her marriage at the discretion of my said wife, if they marry with her advice, otherwise not.
  Item, I will that my wife shall have all my goods in Dertemouth, in the county of Devon for her life, upon condition of finding one chaplain to celebrate yearly during her life for the soul of William Mountford, as in certain writings and evidences thereof made more fully appears.
  The rest of all my goods I bequeath to my wife, Joan, whom I make my sole executrix, and John Newbourgh and William Hudfeld, esquires, my overseers.
  Proved 5 July, 1476, by the executrix named [P.C.C. 23 Wattys].
