Alexander was of Ampertaine House, Upperlands, Maghera, county Londonderry. He was a Justice of the Peace of county of Londonderry in 1912 and chairman of William Clark & Sons Ltd from 1913 until 1937. Alexander was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of county Londonderry in 1918 and High Sheriff of county Londonderry on 4 January 1922 (Belfast Gazette 6 January 1922 p229). He was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Ulster Bank Ltd in Belfast.

Betty was born on 14 September 1905 and baptised on 19 December 1905 in Berhampore, Madras, India, the daughter of Charles Brent Neville Pelly and Annie Harvey Grove. After her divorce from George, Betty married Alexander Maitland Stuart on 8 July 1939 in the City of Westminster district, London.
