Notes: In 1556, John Gifford
(presumably this John, although
possibly his father) bought the manor in the village of Hooton Pagnall,
Yorkshire, from John Fitzwilliam.40 years later, he forfeited his
estates
to the crown "on account of his repeated acts of recusancy committed
during
Queen Elizabeth's reign. He fell foul of an "acte to retaine the
Queenes
Majesties subjects in theire due obedience" in that "he came not
to his parishe churche nor to anye other church, chappell or usual
place
of common prayer by the space of one whole moneth". As a result
of
non-payment of fines totalling £300 his lands were seized by the
Crown in 1596. However by licence granted by King James in 1605,
Gifford
was permitted to sell Hooton Pagnell to Richard Hutton for £2,300"
(quoted from History
of Hooton Pagnall)
