Pardon, for 10 marks paid by them in the hanaper, to Richard son
of Richard Stanhope, ‘chivaler,’ and Elizabeth his wife, daughter of
John Markham, of their trespass in acquiring for her life two parts of
the manor of Tokesford called ‘Longvilers Manoir,’ co. Nottingham, from
the said Richard Stanhope, tenant in chief, and entering therein without
licence.
We know that Elizabeth's father was John Markham, from both Calendar of the Patent Rolls 1401-1405 p360
and Elizabeth's IPM at Inquisition
Post Mortem of Elizabeth (Markham) Stanhope Nottinghamshire 2 November
1437. Some sources have linked this
John Markham to the judge, Sir John Markham, who married Elizabeth de Cressy
and was buried in Markham church in 1409. Most notable of these sources is
Arthur Collins's Peerage.
The Peerage of England vol 3 p258 (Arthur
Collins, 1768)
Richard married
Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Markham, of East-Markham in
Nottinghamshire, Knight, Chief-Justice of the King’s Bench, by whom he
had issue, John, Nicholas, William, and Ralph.
I am unconvinced that these two John Markhams are the same person. The CPR
reference from October 1404, refers to Elizabeth's father only as John
Markham, without titling him as a knight nor mentioning his position as
chief justice, which he held at that time. In addition, many other sources
name Sir John Markham's children as Robert, Henry and Adela, with Adela
marrying Sir Robert Stanhope, possibly the source of the confusion with
Richard Stanhope's wife (see, for example, A History of the Markham Family p14 (David
Frederick Markham, 1854). Finally, in the IPM
of the John Markham who died in 1409, we see that his heir, by
Elizabeth Cressy, is Robert Markham, at that point only 10 years old. The
Elizabeth Markham who married Richard Stanhope must have been much older,
being married to Richard by 1404.
