A marriage record (transcribed at FreeReg,
and listed in Nottinghamshire Parish Registers vol 4 p163
(Phillimore and Blagg, 1902)) exists of the marriage of Henry Carpendale and
Catherine Palfreman on 25 February 1753 in St Mary, Newark, Nottinghamshire.
It is likely that these two records refer to the same event - no parish
record corresponding to the marriage licence is found, and no licence
corresponds to this marriage (although it could have been by banns). Two
data discrepancies exist - the year and the groom's first name. The marriage
occurred less than two years after the conversion from Old Style dates to
New Style dates, and my interpretation is that the central license record,
which has the New Style equivalent, is likely correct while the parish
record records the event using the Old Style year. This is validated by the
fact that this marriage is listed after marriages occurring in December
1753. Regarding the groom's first name, I note that the three Carpendale
baptisms in the parish after the marriage (Thomas, Elizabeth and Ann) both
list George Carpendale as the father (mother not listed), then Catharine,
Sarah and Rebecca are all the children of George and Catherine. No children
of any Henry Carpendale are found. For this reason I believe that the groom
in this marriage was George Carpendale, and that Henry is a transcription
error somewhere along the line.
In January 1754, just over a month
before her marriage to George Carpendale, Catherine sold three messuages
in Mill Gate, Newark, to Rev. Bernard Wilson for £81. These properties were
in the tenure of William Drury, Samuel Hutchinson and Widow Johnson. In the
lease documents, Catherine is described as "spinster of Newark upon Trent,
Nottinghamshire, the only surviving daughter and heir of Richard Palfreyman,
deceased."

Elizabeth may have died young as in
lease documents signed in January 1754, her sister Catherine is described as
"the only surviving daughter and heir of Richard Palfreyman, deceased."

Mary was possibly a twin of her
brother, Richard. The two children were baptised on the same date. She
probably died young as another daughter of William's was baptised Mary in
1694.

Cordwainer
dated 19 November 1734, with a
secondary date, perhaps the date the will was proved, of 12 April 1735. If
so, this would place Richard's death in 1734/5. In any event, we know that
he died before January 1854, when a lease transaction performed by his
daughter Catherine describes her as"the only surviving daughter and heir of
Richard Palfreyman, deceased."

Two baptisms in Newark in the 1660's
are strong candidates for William's baptism. On 3 December 1665, a William
Palfryman was baptised in Newark, the son of William Palfryman, and on 2
April 1668, a William Palfreman was baptised the son of William Palfreman.
