At the birth of his daughter Fanny, in 1878, John was a sergeant in the Army Service Corps, stationed in Malta. John became a warrant officer (in a rank cadre of their own between non-commissioned officers and commissioned officers) and was a conductor (the most senior appointment that can be held by a warrant officer) in the Ordnance Store Corps on 7 May 1893, when he was appointed quartermaster, with the honorary rank of lieutenant (London Gazette 21 May 1895 p2944). On 7 May 1905, Assistant Commissary of Ordnance and Honorary Lieutenant John Staple, Army Ordnance Department, retired, and was granted the honorary rank of captain (London Gazette 12 May 1905 p3427).

Children: Notes: Lilian emigrated to the United States in 1911, joining her husband who had left 15 months earlier. She arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 2 July 1911 aboard the Dominion from Liverpool. She is described as 5'1" tall, of fair complexion with fair hair and blue eyes. She is accompanied by two of her children - Winifred and Walter. Lilian's two other children, Edith and Norah, remained in England until 1913 when they in turn emigrated to the United States.

Death: November 1965, in Pennsylvania, United States, aged 90
