In 1851, Joseph was the lock keeper for the Latton Basin Lock on the Wilts & Berks Canal, and in 1861 he is listed as a wharfinger in Sutton Wick. After his marriage, we find Joseph as a farmer in Hanney, Berkshire (about 3 miles north of Wantage), in 1871 but after Sarah's death we see him in the 1881 and 1891 censuses, back in Wantage as a tramway manager, and he is shown as a retired tramway manager in the1901 census.
