In the Name of God Amen The twentieth daie of August in the year of our Lord God One Thousand six hundred fifty eight I William Cavell of Sellindge in the Countie of Kent Blacksmith being in sound and perfect memory thanks be given unto God for the same doe make and ordaine this my Last will and Testament in manner and form following: First and principally I commend my soule into the hands of Almightie God my maker and Redeemer hopeing assuredlie to be saved in and by the merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour and Redeemer. And my bodie I commend unto the earth from where it was taken to be decentlie buried in the churchyard of Selling at the discretion of my Executor hereafter mentioned.
Item I give and bequeath unto my brother Henrie Cavell three shillings of good current and lawfull monie of England to be paid by my executor within one month after my decease
Item I give and bequeath unto my two grandchildren William Tompson and William Dason Five shillings apeece to be paid within one yere after my decease
Item I give and bequeath to my wife Margaret Cavell my litle? house with the bothiers to it And our Litle Outhouse adioying which latelie Father? Cavell dwelt in and to have full ingress egresse and regresse to fresh water at the pump as need shall require And the sowing of a Tovet? Of hempseed in my hempland yerelie and two loads of wood yerelie to be laid in my backside of my house for her burning so long as she keepeth herself a widdowe after my decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto my wife Margaret Cavell after my decease seaven pounds a yere yerelie to be paid by my executors hereafter named quarterlie to saie at the birth of our Saviour Christ and at the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and St John Baptist and at St Michael the archangell soe long as she keepeth herself a widdowe and noe longer And if my said wife Margaret Cavell doth marrie againe then I give unto her tenne pound to be paid by my executors hereafter named within six monthes next after her marriage.
Item I give and bequeath unto my wife Margaret Cavell one black gore cowe? and six paire of sheets and the bedstedle that joyneth to my litle howse and one other bedstedle and all furniture belonging thereto and one other bedsteadle flockbed and bolster with two blanckets and a coverled and one great brasse kettle one small dish kettle and one small pott brasse stopnet? And a litle stopnet and one small brueing tubb and three small wort tubbs the litle table that standeth in ye old parlor a litle cupbord two bo-es? Two truncks and a chest that standeth at ye feet of my bed that I now lye in and six tablecloathes one dozen of knapkins of the middleing sort and halfe a dozen of towells three pillowcoats and one paire of andirons -th fire panne and tongues and one gridgiron within one moneth after my decease to be paid by my executors
Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Anne Cavell after my decease Fowrescore pounds of good currant and lawfull monie of England to be paid unto her by my executors hereafter named at the daie of her marriage or fowre and twentie yeres of age. And if she happen to die before marriage or fowre and twentie yeres of age then my daughter Bennet is to have the fowre score pounds paid to her at fowre and twentie yeres of age Item I give unto my daughter Ann Cavell two paire of sheets at fowre and twentie yeres of age to be paid by my executors.
Item I give unto my daughter Bennet Cavell after my decease fowre score pounds to be paid at her daie of marriage or fowre and twentie yeres of age of good current monies of England And if she happen to die before marriage or fowre and twentie yeres of age then my will is that my executors shall paie unto my daughter Anne Cavell the said fowre score pounds within seaven yeres of my daughter Bennet's decease Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Bennet Cavell two pairs of sheets to be paid by my executors after my decease at her daie of marriage or fowre and twentie yeres of age
Item I give and bequeath unto my sonn William Cavell after my decease tenn acres of land being in estimation more or lesse lying neere Courtup Street and in the parish of Newington. And after his decease to the issues of his bodie lawfullie begotten forever And if my said sonn Willm Cavell happen to die without heires of his bodie lawfullie begotten then my will is and I give and bequeath all the sayd land unto my sonn Henry Cavell and after his decease to the heires of his bodie lawfullie begotten forever And if my two sonnes Henrie and William Cavell doe both die without heires of their bodies lawfully begotten Then my will is and I give and bequeath all the said lands unto my two daughters Anne Cavell and Bennet Cavell equallie between them
Item I give and bequeath unto my sonn Henrie Cavell after my decease all my said howse where I now live and my Smiths Shopp and the Butchers Shopp barne gardens orchards and all my lands lying and being in the parish of Sellindge Meadow pasture arable and woodland and after his decease to the heires of his bodie lawfully begotten forever And for want of such issue then my will is I give and bequeath all the said howse and lands unto my sonn William Cavell and after his decease to the heires of his bodie lawfully begotten forever And for want of such issue then my will is and I give and bequeath all the said howse and lands to my two daughters Anne Cavell and Bennet Cavell equally between them and to their heires forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Godsonn William Cavell the sonn of my brother Henrie Cavell five shillings to be paid within one yere after my decease by my executors
Item I give and bequeath all the residue of my goods chattles Cuttle? This will was proved at London the fifth dai of February One Thousand six hundred fiftie eight before the Judges for probate of willes and granting Administrations Lawfullie authorized. By the Oath of Henrie Cavell the sonn and sole executor the goods chattles and debts of the said deceased he being first committed sworne truelie to administer the same.
