George, then described as a General Dealer carrying on business as George G. Hughes, out of business, but previously operating from Hughes street, Everton, was declared bankrupt on 10 August 1863 (London Gazette 25 August 1863 p4222). He spent time as a "Prisoner of Debt" in the Liverpool Borough Gaol at Walton (London Gazette 23 December 1864 p6740), at which time he is described as a builder. By 1868, in continuing bankruptcy proceedings, George seems not be in the gaol any longer, as his address is given as 40 Torr Street, Everton (London Gazette 7 April 1868 p2149).
