Ellis Ramsay Reid is recorded as a bachelor, of full age. He is a Lt Colonel
Army Pay Corp, resident in Pietermaritzburg. Helena Kate Coltson is recorded
as a widow, of full age, resident in Pietermaritzburg. The marriage was
witnessed by J. O'Hara and James King.

Gentleman Cadet Ellis Ramsay Reid from the Royal Military College was
commissioned ensign in the 108th Foot on 3 February 1869 (London Gazette 2 February 1869 p525) and
promoted to lieutenant on 8 February 1871 (London Gazette 2 May 1871 p2124). The 108th
Regiment of Foot (Madras Infantry) was stationed in India until
embarking for England in 1876 where it was stationed in Colchester. Ellis
was promoted to captain on 8 December 1877 (London Gazette 18 December 1877 p7252) and
exchanged into the 44th Foot on 13 March 1878 (London Gazette 12 March 1878 p1944),
stationed at Thyetmo, Burma, until 1 July 1881 when the regiment was merged
with the 56th Foot to become the Essex Regiment. On the same date, Ellis was
seconded for service in the Army Pay Department (London Gazette 23 August 1881 p4342). In
October 1881, Ellis resigned his combatant commission with the honorary rank
of captain in the Army, to be appointed Paymaster in the A.P.D. antedated to
11 March 1881 (London Gazette 28 October 1881 p5307). On
25 March 1885, Ellis was granted the local and honorary rank of paymaster
while serving as acting staff paymaster with the Bechuanaland Field Force (London
Gazette 24 March 1885 p1313) and given the honorary rank of
major on 11 March 1886 (London Gazette 9 March 1886 p1140). Ellis
was promoted to staff paymaster on 31 August 1893 (London Gazette 22 September 1893 p5383) and
rated the honorary rank of lieutenant-colonel on 31 August 1898 (London Gazette 6 September 1898 p5323). He
was on active service during the South African War, receiving the Queen's
Medal with three clasps, and the King's Medal with two clasps, mentioned in
despatches on 8 April 1902 (London Gazette 17 June 1902 p3975) and was
awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 26 June 1902 "in recognition of
their services during the operations in South Africa" (London Gazette 24 June 1902 p4192). Ellis
was promoted to chief paymaster with the substantive rank of colonel on the
Army on 11 July 1903 (London Gazette 28 July 1903 p4742). Colonel
Ellis Ramsey Reid, D.S.O. Army Pay Department and Chief Accountant, Western
Command was honoured as Companion of the Military Division of the Honourable
Order of the Bath on 28 June 1907 (London Gazette 25 June 1907 p4430). Ellis
retired on 23 January 1910 (London Gazette 25 January 1910 p619), but
on the outbreak of the War he volunteered at once for active service, and
for two and a half years acted as Command Paymaster of the Eastern and
Southern Commands, when he was finally retired.

FIFTH son of the late Lestock Robert Reid, LC.S.,
Governor of Bombay 1846-47, and of his wife, Jane Boileau Reid.
R.M.C., Sandhurst.
Married, in November, 1901, Helena K. Coltson, widow of C. C. D.
Coltson, and leaves two children.
Colonel Reid was gazetted to the 108th Regiment in 1869. After
seven years' service in India he was for two years in Burmah with the
48th (Essex) Regiment. In 1881 he transferred to the Army Pay Department
and served on General Warren's Staff in the Bechuanaland Campaign, being
twice mentioned in Despatches. He was on active service during the South
African War, receiving the Queen's Medal with three clasps, and the
King's Medal with two clasps, and was awarded the D.S.O. He was
subsequently promoted Colonel and Chief Paymaster, and was Command
Paymaster, first of the Eastern, and then of the Western Command. In
1909 he was made a C.B., retiring in 1910.
On the outbreak of the War he volunteered at once for active
service, and for two and a half years acted as Command Paymaster of the
Eastern and Southern Commands, when he was finally retired. His health
had been seriously affected by hard work, and he died from heart disease
at Colchester on October 14th, 1918.

Ellis is possibly the Ellis Reid who
passed through the R.A.F. Cadet College and was commissioned as a pilot
officer in the Royal Air Force on 19 November 1922 (London Gazette 19 December 1922 p8958), in
which case he would have been following in the footsteps of his
half-brother, Charles Sydney Coltson, who was a decorated airship pilot in
the First World War. The pilot Ellis Reid died on 24 November 1924 in a
flying accident in Hinaidi, Iraq, when his Sopwith Snipe spun into the
