Edwin joined the East India Company Army as a Cadet of Infantry on 25 July 1841 (India Office List 1842) and was promoted to Lieutenant on 10 December 1844 and Captain on 1 May 1854 (Army List 1874).
He served in the 21st and 30th Native Infantry. Edwin was promoted to
Brevet-Major in the Bombay Staff Corps effective 25 July 1861 (London Gazette 28 March 1865 p1750), and promoted to Major on 12 September 1866 (London Gazette 1 March 1867 p1475) and Lieutenant-Colonel on 25 July 1867 (London Gazette 31 December 1867 p7113). On 25 July 1872, Edwin was promoted to Brevet-Colonel in the Bombay Staff Corps (London Gazette 31 January 1873 p423). On his retirement on 23 October 1875, Edwin was given the step of honorary rank of Major-General (London Gazette 22 October 1875 p4954).
