"On 7th May 1837, people flocked to St
Thomas Church to take part in the first services held at St Thomas. For many,
this was a new experience and so many people there was that many had to sit
outside the church. The church had been completely financed by Mr Kinnersley,
and the afternoon service was taken by the first Vicar of St Thomas' the
Reverend Frederick Tobias Wade, whom the infants school next door to the church
was to be later named after."
