James was teaching at North Division High School in Chicago in 1895 (Proceedings of the Board of Education of the City of Chicago 1894-1895 p564). He taught mathematics at St Paul's School on Long Island, New York, at that time under the head master, Dr. Frederick Luther Gamage. After a dispute with the bishop, he resigned and started his own school in Pawling, New York, taking with him the majority of the faculty, including James Elliot, and most of the students (New York Times 12 June 1907 p4). James was one of the eight founders of the corporation that owned the private school, and one of its initial trustees (Report of the Education Department 1908 vol 5 part 1 p497). James taught at Pawling School for at least the next 33 years (1920, 1930, 1940 census).
