Alex's family was from Glasgow, Scotland. In England he was an actor and clown. He performed monologues at the Palladium in London which he could still recall many years later. At one point he shared digs with the then unknown Charlie Chaplin. Alex was also a clown with the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Alex  served in World War I and survived being wounded and also gassed at Ypres. After emigrating to Canada, Alex worked as a postman in North Bay, Ontario, until his retirement. He died in 1969.

Notes: Emily was usually known by her third name, "May". She told her grandson the story of being let out of school in 1912 in Portsmouth where the whole class went down to the harbour port and waved goodbye to the passenger ship Titanic. She used to say how lucky she thought all those people were ... until she heard the report of the sinking off the coast of Newfoundland.

May and Alexander emigrated to Canada. They settled initially in Sunridge near North Bay, Ontario and subsequently moved to North Bay.

ENGINE DRIVER’S RETIREMENT - Passengers on a Gosport train were surprised when, without any apparent reason, the staccato raps of fog signal were heard. This was the method adopted by Mr. Frederick George Underwood to show that after 48 years with the railway service he was driving his last train and was retiring. His colleagues took leave of him later, and Driver W. Linney, in their name presented him with a walking stick, together with an umbrella for Mrs. Underwood. Mr. Underwood, who has taken up residence at 53 St Ann’s Crescent, Gosport, was the pioneer driver of the Drummond steam cars on the spur line from Fratton to Southsea, and he continued on that service until August 1914, when the line was closed. In the following December he was appointed to Gosport, Fareham and Meon Valley line passenger service. He has been driver in charge for the last 9½ years. His proud boast is that he has never had an accident, and never been late for duty.
