Notes:
The baptisms of two Jane Clarkes, both the daughter of Samuel Clarke
and Ann Rampley are recorded in the IGI baptism extracts - one on 29
August 1798 and 12 November 1799. Although it is possible that this is
either a transcription error or for some reason a second baptism, I
have represented it as two separate daughters, with the first one
presumably dying young. John Nichols represents the situation as a
single person, initially baptised on 29 August 1798, and later
marrying Henry Smith. The 1881 census gives an age of 84, indicating a
birthyear of the surviving Jane as 1796/7, which is a strike against
the two-Jane theory, but the age at death, generally more accurate,
lists her age as 83 at her death in early 1882, indicating birth in
1798/9.
