Notes: Bertie served
in the Royal Navy during World War II. His ship was sunk during the
war, and he was picked up by a German submarine. A photograph exists of
him being pulled from the water taken by the Germans on the submarine
that picked him up. Berie was a prisoner of war, and caught
tuberculosis . He was never fit again, and died in 1959.

Arms in Eye, Suffolk, in the 1891 census and in 1892 he is
listed as a Pork Butcher and Victualler at the Bedingfield Arms in William White's
History Gazetteer and Directory of Suffolk.
Later Francis
operated The Maybush
(not the Maypole as shown in the 1901 census). He is listed as Beer
House Keeper at the Maybush in 1897 and 1904.
After his death, the pub was run by his widow. The Maybush closed as a
beer house in 1922. Francis's tombstone declares that he was "clerk of
this parish" (Ixworth Thorpe) for 21 years.
