Birth: 1861, in Great Livermere, Suffolk, England

Baptised: 23 February 1862, in Great Livermere, Suffolk, England

Father: William Callas

Mother: Emily (Channell) Callas

Married: Eliza Annie Campin on 29 September 1888, in Great Livermere, Suffolk, England. The marriage was witnessed by Charles Simmons and Ada Callas. John is recorded as aged 27, a bachelor and labourer of Livermere, the son of William, a labourer. Annie Simmons Campin is recorded as aged 26, a spinster of Ampton, the daughter of Charles Simmons, a labourer.

Eliza Annie seemed to go by Annie Eliza in later life. She was born in 3Q 1862 in Bury St Edmunds, the daughter of Eliza Annie Campin. Her name is listed in the Birth Index as Eliza Amy Campin. Her mother married Charles Simmons in 1Q 1863, in Bury St Edmunds district, and the 1871 census records Eliza's name as Eliza A. Campin, the daughter of Charles and Eliza Simmons (residing at 5 School Hall Lane in Bury St Edmunds), while the 1881 census records her as Eliza A. Simmonds, the daughter of Charles and Eliza A. Simmonds. Her marriage record in 1881 lists her as Annie Simmons Campin, and the 1891 and 1901 censuses list her as Annie E. Callas and Annie Eliza Callas. Her mother, Eliza, died in 1882, and her (step)father remarried Harriet Payne in 1887. I wonder if the death of her mother and remarriage of her father somehow prompted this Eliza to subsequently go by Annie Eliza rather than Eliza Annie? Eliza/Annie is listed in the 1881 and 1891 censuses as deaf (but not in the 1901?). The 1901 census lists her occupation as a "wool laundress". Annie died in 1940 and is buried in Wainwright, Alberta.

Eliza's (step)sister, Jemima Simmons, the daughter of Charles Simmons and Eliza Campin, married John's brother, Charles, in 1895.

Children: Occupation: Agricultural labourer (1881); Garden labourer (1891); Under Gardener (1901)

Notes: Although Jonas was born two years before the marriage of  his mother and Francis Shaw, the inclusion of the name Shaw amongst his given middle names, his use of the Shaw surname after his parents marriage, and the 1861 and 1871 census listings showing him as the son (rather then the stepson) of Francis Shaw all combine to be fairly conclusive that Francis Shaw was Jonas's father.
